Ind.  I told him that I have paid Rs.5 for those pictures.

D.   R said, “There will be a public meeting in this hall to-morrow.”

Ind.  R said that there would be a public meeting in that hall the next day.

D.   R said to S, “I am sure I shall never forget it.”

Ind. R told or assured S that he was sure he would never forget it.

D.     I said to you, “We are too late for the train.”

Ind. I told you that we were too late for the train.

D.     You said to me, “I saw it with my own eyes.”

Ind.   You told me that you had seen it with your own eyes.


Exercise

১। এই দুই প্রকার বাক্যের মধ্যে পার্থক্য বুঝাইতে হইবে। বক্তা যাহা বলিয়াছেন তাহা তাঁহার কথায় বলিলে ও তাঁহার কথা অন্য সময়ে “তিনি বলিয়াছেন যে” বা “তিনি বলিলেন যে” এই প্রকারে উদ্ধৃত করিলে এই পার্থক্য হয়। প্রথমটিকে direct, দ্বিতীয়টিকে indirect speech বলা হয়।

২। ইহার পর শিক্ষক ছাত্রদিগকে লক্ষ্য করিতে বলিবেন direct speech কে indirect করাতে কোন্‌ উদাহরণে কি পরিবর্তন হইয়াছে। নিম্নলিখিত কয়েকটি বিষয় লক্ষ্য করিতে হইবে–

(১) quotation mark উঠাইয়া that দিতে হইবে।

(২) said to থাকিলে অর্থানুযায়ী told, remarked, assured, observed ইত্যাদি দিতে হইবে।

(৩) quotation -এর ভিতরকার sentence -এর বাহিরের ক্রিয়ার tense অনুযায়ী পরিবর্তিত হয়। বাহিরে future বা present tense থাকিলে কোন পরিবর্তন হয় না; past tense থাকিলে ভিতরে past tense বা past perfect tense হয়;shall, will, have, has থাকিলে should, would, had হইবে।

(৪) this, these -এর স্থানে that,those হয়। now, to-night, to-day, to- morrow, here থাকিলে যথাক্রমে then, that night, that day, next day, there হয়।

(৫) যে বলিতেছে ও যাহাকে বলাইতেছে, এই দুইয়ের উপর লক্ষ্য রাখিয়া pronoun -এর person বদলাইতে হয়।

৩। Indirect করো–

R says, “I know a little girl named Lila.”

R said, “I will go home with my teacher.”

R said to S, “I will do anything for you because you are very kind to me.”

R said to me, “I am sorry to disturb you in any way.”

R said to you, “You need not trouble your head about that, for it is all the same to me.”

R said to him, “ I will come down when you are gone.”

R said to me, “You cannot get there to-night, for it is a long way off from here.”
